This is gonna be your 11th attempt and I appreciate your persistence and I thank you for coming all the way down here but I really wish you'd have saved yourself Sir... If I may, if I may. This is my strongest application yet and this would be my 12th attempt, not my 11th. Okay. Let's hear it? What's changed, what's different this time? over the course of the last 10 years. Every academic professional and personal decision I've made. I've made with the space program in mind. I have my masters in electrical engineering. with over 800 hours under my belt. I have my scuba diving certificate. I just ran the San Francisco Marathon. And I speak Russian sir. I... in fact I volunteered to travel to Siberia as part of the transparency program for the US Department of energy. I'm the father of five most perfect children and then the husband of a the most incredible wife who threatened to leave me if I didn't come here today. I've applied 12 times and yes sir I've been on the verge of giving up after each and every rejection. here I am. So you could turn me down again but rest assured I'll be standing here again in a year.

A Million Miles Away tells the story of José Hernández, who dreamed of becoming an astronaut despite coming from a background that made that goal seem almost impossible. He applied to NASA again and again, only to receive rejection after rejection. But José didn't simply keep sending applications and hope for a different answer. Every rejection became a reason to improve himself. He gained more education, developed his skills, worked harder, and kept becoming more qualified for the opportunity he wanted. After the 11th rejection, he was ready to give up. His wife encouraged him to try one more time, and that final attempt eventually changed everything. José was accepted into NASA and ultimately became an astronaut. The lesson is bigger than NASA. If you stop pursuing your dream, you guarantee that it will never happen. You might get rejected ten times, twenty times, or more, but every attempt gives you another opportunity to improve and try again.
