I went from making $13/hr doing concrete work to earning $100K+ in Construction Management. 🏗️ Here are the steps I took 👇 1. I started in the field. 🛠️ Fresh out of high school, I knew I eventually wanted to get into Construction Management, but I wanted to learn construction firsthand first. So I became a concrete laborer making $13/hr. I learned to read prints, take measurements, do layout, set forms and rebar, and understand how work actually gets installed. Looking back, that field experience became one of the most valuable parts of my career. 2. I went to college for Construction Management while still working concrete. 👨‍💻 This is where I learned the management side: contracts, project controls, RFIs, submittals, estimating, scheduling, and procurement. I started attending career fairs, applying for internships, earned my OSHA 30 and Procore PM certifications, and learned software like Procore, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, and OST. 3. I landed an internship with a commercial GC. 🏗️ This gave me my first real exposure to managing commercial projects. 4. I became a commercial glass & glazing estimator. 🦺 I gained experience with estimating, takeoffs, scopes of work, pricing, and learned how important the preconstruction side of a project is. I built out proposals and won multiple projects for the company. 5. At 22, I became a Project Engineer for a large commercial GC.👷 I started working on ground-up, mission-critical, and corporate interior projects, managing RFIs, submittals, procurement, coordination, and supporting field operations. Eventually, I moved into the field as an Assistant Superintendent, traveling across the country and managing commercial construction projects. That path took me from $13/hr doing concrete work to a six-figure+ career in Construction Management. There wasn’t one degree, certification, or shortcut that got me here. It was stacking skills and experience. Everyone’s journey looks different, and you don’t need a college degree to get started. What you do need is the right skills.
