room tour!

I just spent 52 hours on the overnight Amtrak California Zephyr train from San Francisco to Chicago. I booked a private roomette cabin for my trip, which during the day served as my private little seating area, but at night turns into a sleeper cabin with two twin beds. So here's a quick room tour of my cabin. I was traveling solo, but technically the roomette can sleep up to two people. Two chairs down below turn into a twin bed and there's also a bunk bed that folds down from the ceiling that has another twin. And there's actually a bit more storage space than I expected. The left side of the roomette has two steps. This is where I kept all of my snacks and my tech items. Although technically these are the steps that would get you up to the top bunk on the ceiling. Although they worked great as storage shelves. And there's also a little built-in cubby. So if you were sleeping on the bottom bed, you would have this to store items. The seats themselves are super comfortable and spacious. They also recline really far back. They were really comfortable to sit in all day. There's also a little control panel on the side with a reading light, volume control for the announcements, a button to call your room attendant and the overhead light switch which had a bright light for the day and an evening light. There's also a collapsing tray table and two drink holders just in between the chairs. This was really nice for snacks or if you wanted to come eat your lunch in here or put your laptop on it to watch movies. And it's still usable when the chairs are in the bed position, which was really nice. Looking over to the other side of the cabin, there's of course the other chair. There's another control panel over here. This one also has a reading light. There's also temperature control to turn on the heat. There's only one plug for the entire roomette, so I recommend bringing a little extension cord. I have mine tucked in beside the chair. And then just next to the chairs, there's some empty wall space that has a coat hook. This is a great place to hang your toiletry bag or your little hanging organizer. Help you stay organized and collect all of your little items. I also brought a section cup travel fan, which I was so thankful for because it did get quite toasty in my cabin during the day. And then next to the closet, there's a little trash can. The cabin does also have a sliding glass door that locks from the inside and it has curtains that velcro to the door to give you some privacy. Although there are no outside locks, I did feel like my items were very safe inside. I kept all of my valuables in my suitcase under my chair and I just used my TSA lock. And then each train car also has a dedicated attendant that also keeps an eye on everything. Speaking of attendant, when you're at dinner each evening, they'll come by and convert your chairs into beds and they'll convert that top bunk into the top bunk if you have a second person. And then they'll come back in the morning and break down your bed and convert it back into chairs. As for bathrooms, the roomettes have dedicated bathrooms and showers that you share only with the other people in your car. I had no gripes with them. They were really clean and the shower pressure was really good. Overall, as a solo traveler, I thought the roomette was the perfect size. I never felt like it was too tight. Actually, because you're spending a lot of time in common areas like the observation car and dining car, it would probably feel a little tight if I was traveling with a second person. I definitely would upgrade to the larger room if I was traveling with my husband. That's a quick tour of my little roomette cabin on the Amtrak California Zephyr.
