I recently took the Amtrak train from San Francisco to Chicago in one of their sleeper cabins. And here are the six things I was so glad I packed for surviving 52 hours straight on the Amtrak train. First up was my little travel fan. During the day when the sun was streaming through the windows, it did get quite toasty in my train cabin. So having this little fan came in so clutch. It has four different power settings and it oscillates. It has a little suction cup mount on the bottom so you can just stick it right to the wall. I had it above my head while I was sleeping and it was such a game changer. Another item I was so thankful to have was slip on shoes. I was always popping up and out of my cabin to get coffee and or to spot something out the window on the observation car. So having shoes you could quickly slip on and off just made life super easy, especially getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. So make sure you're packing a pair. Another thing that made life easier on the train was having a little hanging organizer. I could hang on the hooks in my room and this is where I organized all of my small items I wanted quick access to like my AirPods, my e-reader, my Clorox wipes, my mask, and my tablet. And it was also useful for keeping small items safe because the train is constantly moving, so I didn't want my AirPods to be flying off. One item that I thought for sure was going to be overkill was painter's tape. I learned this tip from another Amtrak traveler said that it's always useful to have a couple pieces of tape on hand just in case you get a door that rattles or something that squeaks in your cabin and somebody who is a very light sleeper like me, something like that would drive me crazy. So I packed some painter's tape just in case and it ended up coming in so handy. I actually used it to black out the light in the hallway at night because I forgot my sleeping mask like a rookie. So it ended up saving me and it's super low effort to pack. So I will always be packing something like that that I have on the train from now on. Another thing that I was really grateful I packed was an extension cord because there's only one plug in each cabin. So I used this to charge all of my electronics. One thing to note, the plug is kind of set deep into a control panel, so make sure you're packing a smaller plug ones won't fit. And then the last item that I never travel without, but I was especially glad to have on the train was my motion sickness patches. They're 100% herbal, non-drowsy, and they last up to 72 hours. I packed these and put one on before we even left California because I was nervous about the shakiness of the train and they worked like a gem. I ended up having no motion sickness whatsoever, even when the train got pretty rocky. So I was glad that I packed them. I put them right behind my ear and they last for up to three days. So those were my six travel essentials I would definitely pack if I was riding the Amtrak sleeper train again. All of them are linked in my Amazon Storefront and Shop My!
