I drove up from Charlotte North Carolina to New River Gorge National Park with my dog and here are three things you cannot miss if you decide to go. The first thing I recommend is to drive Fayette Station Road. It's this steep winding road that takes you all the way down into the gorge. The views here are so gorgeous, you're going to want to pull over and get out every five seconds, which is what we did. We drove a 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid here, and it was made for roads like this. It has all-wheel drive and smooth handling, which was perfect on these windy roads. Stop number two is the Nuttallburg coal mining tipple. This is a historic coal mining site, and the old tipple structure is still here. It makes you feel like you're going back in history. It's just so cool to walk through. I'm not going to sugarcoat the road to get there though. It's all gravel, it's pretty narrow, and it was raining on us. So it was pretty intense, but the Forester's all-wheel drive and X-mode made this a non-issue for us. And the last must-do experience is hiking the Grandview Overlook hike. You hike out to the canyon rim and the view of the river below is so gorgeous. You can walk out to the main overlook, but there's also a hike that gives you different viewpoints.
