Hook
I like people who can sense when to stop talking to me. That's an underrated social skill. Because sometimes nothing is wrong. I'm not mad at you. You didn't do anything. I've just reached my daily limit for receiving information. And the people who recognize that without making it a whole thing, like they're just elite, you know? They notice my responses have gone from full sentences to, like, yeah. And that's crazy. And they understand the establishment is closing. No last calls necessary. Meanwhile, other people see you visibly shutting down and somehow take it as an encouragement to introduce a new topic. So anyway, my coworker Sarah, do you know my coworker Sarah? No, I don't. Please don't give me a new character. I don't have the bandwidth to learn Sarah's backstory right now. And then there are people who ask the most dangerous question possible. Are you okay? I was. Now I have to participate in your investigation against my will. So I'm not okay anymore. Sometimes I just don't want to talk. That's the entire medical diagnosis. Nothing happened. I'm not secretly upset. I don't need you to pull more information out of me. I need you to recognize that I've contributed everything I had available to the conversation today. That's it. Think of me like a phone battery. You plug it in, you leave it alone. The best friendships are with people who understand this. We can talk for three hours, and then at some point, one of us goes quiet. And the other person just gets it. No offense taken. No why are you being weird? Just two adults understanding that sometimes the nicest thing you can do for someone else that you love is stop speaking to them.
