What not to do on your Japan trip. Number one, don't exchange all your money when you arrive. Instead, use a 7-11 ATM when you get there. Your debit card will get a much better rate. When it asks about the currency, decline the conversion. Your bank will be able to give you better rates than the Japanese banks will be able to. Number two, don't show up without sorting your data first. Buying it at the airport will cost more, and if you don't actually need to make local calls, an eSIM is just fine. Download an eSIM before you leave home. I usually use PocketPal. No. 3, don't drag your suitcase everywhere. Japan has lots of stairs. Use a luggage forwarding service like Yamato or Sagawa Express to get your stuff from the hotel to the airport or hotel to hotel. It's pretty reliable, and it's what most travelers do.
