So you have this brown mark your pimple left behind? There's actually a reason it's still hanging around. It could be PIH, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. So basically, when your skin gets irritated or inflamed, it can respond by producing extra melanin. And once the inflammation is gone, that extra pigment can stick around as a dark brown or sometimes greyish mark. So instead of throwing random brightening products at it, I like to think about PIH in 3 different steps! 1. Help your skin shed the existing pigment. So this is where retinoids and chemical exfoliants can be useful. They increase cell turnover, which helps pigmented skin cells shed over time. 2. Slow down new pigment production. By using ingredients like Vitamin C, azelaic acid, alpha arbutin, kojic acid, tranexamic acid. They can help interfere with the process your skin uses to produce melanin, so you're not constantly creating more pigmentation while trying to fade the old marks. You don't need all of them. Don't start everything at once! Pick what your skin actually tolerates and stick with it. Example: ☀️ AM Vitamin C -> azelaic acid -> Vitamin C -> repair -> repeat 🌙 PM Retinoid -> repair -> Retinoid -> repair -> Retinoid -> repair -> repair 3. Sunscreen, the most important! Protecting our skin, because UV exposure can stimulate more melanin and make the pigmentation you already have look darker. So SPF every morning is a must! This is one of the things where consistency matters! Way more than having a 10-step or having the best products. So give your skin time, don't overdo the actives, don't over-exfoliate. Let the pigmentation fade gradually. I'll leave some product recommendations and how I would use them in the caption so you know where to start.
