👖Did Evisu copy Levi’s? Evisu: one of the most important names in denim. But where did the name come from? Truth is, it’s partially stolen. -Evisu’s original name was EVIS, a play on Levi’s (they just took away the L)… Since they were already making very similar jeans to Levi’s, they decided to add a U to the end to differentiate themselves for legal reasons. They became Evisu. Evisu is still a play on Levi’s, while also being a reference to a Japanese god, Ebisu. The reference fit the vision of the founder (Hidehiko Yamane) because he was big into fishing. -To complete the brand identity and give us the brand we know today, Evisu played off of Levi’s signature “arcuate” back pocket stitching details and made larger, simple, hand-painted seagull outlines. This is the most recognizable part of a pair of Evisu’s today. -There’s so much more history to the brand, as they were one of the big “Osaka 5” Japanese denim makers that defined today’s market.
