It is my job as a professional declutter coach to help you own less stuff. So today I wanna run you through six rules that you can start implementing in your house, literally today. So if you're someone that kind of just needs to be told like what the fuck to do, like a little slap on the face, it's like wake up, you got too much shit in your house, you need to follow these six rules and let me know how it goes. Rule number one is if it's not a hell yes, it's a hell no. And this is kind of like a life motto. But when you're going to declutter a space, just start holding things up. You'll know immediately, like, once you know this rule, it'll stay in your brain forever. My clients and you guys are always like, oh my gosh, I can hear your voice decluttering my house. And I feel like my job is done here. But if it's not a hell yes, it's a hell no. So you're holding up something, okay, I'll say it's a water bottle. At this water bottle and you're just not immediately freaking love yes, I love this, I want to use this every day forever, it's probably a hell no and you should just let it go. Rule number two is you need to stop organizing your clutter. DECLUTTER FIRST!!! So don't just start picking a spot and just be like, oh, Emily said I need to get organized, so just start organizing all of your shit. That's not the goal. The goal is to declutter, meaning going through literally everything and decide what is staying and what is going. So never start organizing clutter. Declutter first, then you can buy all the cute organizing bins. Next rule that you need to follow is the one year rule. This one is very straightforward. If you have not used it in over a year, you need to let it go because listen, if you've lasted an entire year, every season, every life without said item, just let it stop win. Stop coming up with hypothetical reasons of like, oh, I could use this for that, or oh, my friend would really like this. I'll put a pile over here for my friend. I'll give it to her. Listen, you'll never do that. So do yourself a favor and just let it go. Rule number four is make sure that every room in your house has boundaries, its own set of rules. This means that the home office can only have home type things. It cannot continue to be a collection for everybody's shit. Same thing with like the mudroom area. You cannot just be a collection for everybody's shit. So if you put something down, you have to have a system in place. It's like, nope, where does that go? Reason, saying, but don't put it down, put it away. That. You need rules so that you're not continuing to set things down everywhere in your house and then before you know it, you have piles everywhere. And then you're on hoarders. And we don't want that. Rule number five, listen up. If you're someone that like, holds on to like literally everything, all the sentimental items, all of that. That. So you can keep things, but you don't need to keep everything. So what I tell people, a little trick is everybody in your house should get like a box, like a memory box. So whatever size you want to do, that's fine, but everybody gets a box. And whatever can fit in the box that you want to keep, that you're feeling really guilty about, that you want to pass on to your kids like, you get a box and everything goes in the box. If it doesn't fit in the box, it needs to go. Rule number six, which my absolute favorite one is one in. ONE OUT. ✌️ Rules also straightforward. You bring one water bottle into the house, guess what? One's gotta go. Okay? For every one that you bring to, you probably need to let like five go because most of you guys have like 50 water bottles in your house. Same goes for like a shirt. You go shopping for you or your kids, your husband? Few shirts, guess what? You need to go through your closet and get stuff that you haven't worn in years. One in, one out. Write it down. That's it. My friends. That is it for today. But hopefully that was helpful. If you're seeing this and you're hearing this and you're taking notes, I love you. And if you're wanting actually new declutter September 1st, so we're kicking off very, very soon. So if you like structure, you want to take these rules and implement it in your house and just freaking get after it. We're going to do 30 days of decluttering in September.
