Artist Patricia Piccinini creates hyperrealistic sculptures that imagine strange forms of life, combining human, animal and invented biological characteristics. In The Bond (2016), a woman gently holds a newborn-like hybrid creature against her body. Made from silicone, fibreglass and human hair, the sculpture is modeled with extraordinary detail, from wrinkles and skin texture to tiny fingers and feet. Much of Piccinini’s art explores similar questions around biotechnology, genetic engineering, reproduction and our responsibility toward new forms of life.
