The internet convinced us that dogs licking other dogs in private areas is always sexual. As a dog owner and breeder, I can tell you it's actually more complicated than that. It's often not what you think it is at all. Male dogs do it. Female dogs do it too. Sometimes they'll even direct the behavior toward themselves. If it were purely sexual, all of those situations wouldn't make much sense. I've watched dogs suddenly start doing it during play before, while their owners stood there completely confused. Nothing romantic was happening. No mating was taking place. That's the actual truth. It's more about general arousal and social behavior than specifically sexual behavior. The most common reason is simple curiosity and excitement. Second, dogs use their mouths and noses to investigate other animals, so unusual smells can trigger it. And the third reason surprises most owners. Sometimes it's simply a learned behavior that gets reinforced by attention. People see it online and immediately call it sexual.
