The internet convinced us that dogs hump because they're horny. As a breeder, I can tell you it's actually more complicated than that. It's often not what you think it is at all. Even neutered dogs do it. Female dogs do it too. If it were purely sexual, neither of those things would make sense. I've watched a neutered dog hump a pillow mid-play once. Owner mortified apologizing to everyone in the room. Dog had zero hormones left to blame for it. Honestly, pure excitement, nothing else going on there at all. That's the actual truth. It's more about general arousal, not specifically sexual arousal. The most common reason is simple over-excitement, energy with nowhere else to go. Second most common reason, stress or anxiety releasing tension, the only way the dog knows how. And the third reason surprises most owners. It's because of you. Some dogs learn it gets a reaction, laughter, attention, even scolding. To a dog, any reaction can reinforce a behavior, even a negative one. People laugh it off online as just a horny dog joke. The real explanation is almost always about emotional regulation, not attraction. Dog owners, has yours ever done this had nothing to do with excitement or arousal?
