FIRST IMPRESSIONS REVIEW OF MILEY'S "BASS PERSUADES"

I just listened to Miley Cyrus' brand new single called Bass Persuades coming off of the lowest selling album of her career, she had every reason to play it as safe as possible with this new era and instead she stuck to her guns. Got a little bit weirder and it's why Bass Persuades I think works so well. But if you haven't yet heard Bass Persuades, check out my reaction. My Sub$tack :) So this is the lead single and title track off of Miley's upcoming 10th album that comes out September 18th. And after something beautiful, commercially came and went last year, I've been thinking pretty much since then about where next. Miley has this pattern throughout her discography to make something incredibly accessible like Flowers have massive success with it and then essentially blow the whole thing up by pushing boundaries and doing something completely unexpected with a new era on. Miley easily could have delivered another Flowers, but instead she chose to do the exact opposite. Bass Persuades takes some of the dark dance pop DNA of River, Ever Loved, and turns it into this menacing, dark and grungy electropop song with tons of Britney Spears woven into and its accompanying music video, a visual feast. Kinda like she listened to Blackout, BLACKOUT, probably for the 500th time and you know what's, I got an idea. Bass Persuades consistently kept me on in a delivery perspective too. This deadpan delivery that's borderline haunting, the prechorus comes through. Miley sounds angelic in the exact voice that I love most and then the chorus comes around, so hooky. The entire song is basically Miley looking at our world, how overstimulated we are staring at, paving over everything, consuming consistently more and more every day, but more than anything becoming more disconnected. Her solution is basically fuck it and dance. But more than anything, what I find the most interesting is what it says about Miley as an artist. She knows exactly what commercially successful Miley Cyrus sounds like. She gave us Flowers. She could have kept chasing that forever, but instead, even after an album underperformed commercially, she still chooses to go the riskier route. And I think that's always been the most fascinating part about Miley Cyrus, whether it's Bangerz, Dead Petz, Younger Now, Plastic Hearts, ESV, now Something Beautiful and Bass Persuades. She's never consistently stayed in one place or in the place that the audience wants her to. Do I think Bass Persuades is going to be another Flowers-sized, gargantuan hit single on first listen? Probably not. Just given how this is a little more out there for the public than most. The production may be too abrasive and weird for the everyday person to really call this their song, but I'd much rather have Miley dialed into something that feels true to herself than just completely reverse engineering another hit single. So after a few listens, I'm sold. The Bass Persuades me, but I do want to know what you guys sound off in the comments. What your thoughts are and follow for more music content.
