7 years ago today, 4 songs dropped that flopped but became cult classics

7 years ago today was a historic day in music because we got so many songs that flopped on the charts but truly ended up becoming cult classics. And I think they all flopped because of the same reason which I'm going to explain. Starting with this song by Katy Perry. Never Really Over by Katy Perry was supposed to be Katy Perry's big comeback single after the messy Witness era, but unfortunately it was just the start of another messy era after that. It really had everything that we want in a song of the summer like infectious pop chorus and summary visuals. The song did have a pretty decent debut of No. 15 but ended up falling off the charts pretty quickly after that. The general public might not have gotten this song but gay Twitter most certainly did. Like I remember seeing this song everywhere on Stan Twitter that year. Up next is a song that should have been Miley Cyrus's big comeback moment. Mother's Daughter was Miley Cyrus's first solo single since the underperformance of Younger Now in 2017 and it was the perfect comeback song like it was a high energy empowerment anthem that went along so well with Miley's brand as an artist which is why it is insane that only peaked at No. 54. Her fans have always loved this song so much though like there was one time when her fans of Brazil got it trending when Miley was doing a show there so Miley was just like fuck it I'm gonna add it to my setlist tonight. Justice for Mother's Daughter and the She Is Coming EP. Next up is a song by Cardi B that at the time was so highly anticipated. We all know where we were when Cardi B posted that video of her in the studio listening to Press. It peaked at No. 16 and it honestly didn't really have much longevity which might not seem like a total flop but for Cardi's standards at the time it was because she had just had hit after hit with Invasion of Privacy. That snippet itself was so powerful though that I really do think it became one of Cardi's signature songs. Before I get to the next one make sure to follow me for more pop music content like this. Up next is this disco pop banger by Mark Ronson and Camila Cabello. The song came out after Camila's massive debut album era so I really thought it was going to dominate that summer but sadly it didn't even chart at all and peaked at No. 2 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100. I think what is beautiful about it is that it is so CXOXO coded like I would not be surprised if Camila revisited this song's sound and visuals before creating CXOXO. Now the reason I think all these songs underperformed was that 2019 was such a competitive year specifically for song of the summer. There were so many breakthrough moments happening that year with artists like Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, and Lizzo so because of the fact that these artists were at the top of the charts for so long especially throughout the summer it was hard for other artists to come through and try to compete with them. Like Taylor Swift couldn't even get a number one song that summer. But this truly was such a fun New Music Friday. I remember being so excited when all these songs dropped and it was right before Pride Month too. The gays got multiple pop bangers on this release day.
