How does THIS $2 block of tofu turn into a steak dinner. Watch the whole process. I start with one block of extra firm tofu and I freeze it first. Once it's completely thawed, I press it overnight to get as much liquid out as possible. I like to wrap mine in a clean paper towel because the drier you get the tofu, the better it's going to absorb all that marinade. Once it's pressed, I cut it into thick slabs. I personally prefer thicker pieces because they give you a much more meatier bite. Then I score it and poke a few small holes into the tofu so that the marinade can really get in there. For the marinade, I use 1/2 cup of pomegranate juice, 1 tablespoon of low sodium soy sauce, 2 teaspoons of vegan steak sauce, 2 teaspoons of steak seasoning, 2 teaspoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of onion powder. I put everything into a bag with the tofu, make sure it's completely coated and let it marinate for 24 hours, flipping it every few hours. The next day, I heat up a little oil in a pan over medium heat and sear the tofu for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side until it's nice and crispy and brown. Then comes my favorite part. I remove the tofu, wipe out any burnt pieces and add 2 tablespoons of vegan butter, 3 to 5 sliced garlic cloves and some thyme or rosemary or any herbs of choice. Once that gets nice and fragrant, I put the tofu back in and pour in the remaining marinade and start basting it all over. And this is what I end up with. A crispy, juicy, flavorful tofu steak dinner that started with a $2 block of tofu. Would you try this?
