Most people think of the auto parts store as just a place to buy stuff, but there are 5 services that don't cost you anything and skipping them means just wasting more of your money. Number 5: Check engine light reading. They call it Veriscan. You plug it in and it tells you the code. This isn't a full diagnosis, but will get you pointed in the right direction, hopefully. At some shops, this can be $100 or more. Number 4: Battery testing & charging. On the car or off of it. You can bring the battery in and get it tested for free to see if it's good. And you also get free recharging. This isn't just cars though. It's most marine, motorcycle, ATV, heavy duty, AGM, lawn and garden, and car batteries all based on their website. Number 3: Starter + Alternator Testing. Same type of deal. You can test the condition of your starter or alternator to help you diagnose any potential issues and find the right parts. Number 2: Wiper/Headlight Installs. Wiper blade and headlight bulb installation. Free if you buy them there. These are easy mechanic charges that you probably pay for, that you can get done for free in most cases. For the bulb installation, some cars are excluded though. So here are the terms and conditions. And number 1: Oil, fluid, or battery recycling. And some locations even give you a $10 gift card for an old battery. But O'Reilly isn't just for free stuff. Their paid services are their loaner tool program, you can rent specialty tools, brake drum and rotor resurfacing for a small fee, custom hydraulic hoses, free cutting and crimping, custom paint mixing, color match touch-up paint, machine shop services at some locations for engine rebuilds and restorations. None of these are full diagnosis. Be sure of what you're buying after some of these free tests. Go check O'Reillys before paying someone a lot of $$$ for something this basic.
