Before interpreting a chest X-ray, make sure the image itself is adequate. Use RIP: Rotation Inspiration Penetration Check the medial clavicles against the spinous processes, count posterior ribs to assess inspiration, and make sure the thoracic vertebrae are faintly visible through the heart. Poor technique can distort normal anatomy and mimic disease.
