This gate close one of the last major vulnerabilities exposed by the September 11th attacks. This is called a secondary cockpit barrier, and it's designed to protect pilots out of the cockpit door and the door is open, clearly exposing the cockpit to a major security risk. Airlines have been placing even beverage carts in this area, to make it so that somebody couldn't rush the cockpit, say, when a pilot comes out on a long flight to go to the restroom. This is now required on all new commercial airliners delivered to US airlines. But here is the catch. This does not extend to existing planes, it could take decades for you to see this everywhere. The good news Southwest Airlines is taking delivery of dozens of new 737s already installed.
