One of the biggest misconceptions about Alzheimer’s is that the memory itself is simply gone. In many cases, the bigger issue is access. As amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles disrupt communication between areas of the brain involved in memory and cognition, retrieving those memories becomes harder. We need to stop looking at Alzheimer’s as just “memory loss” and start asking what’s disrupting the brain’s ability to function in the first place.
