1. Why am I fighting so hard to be chosen by someone who keeps making me question whether they want me? You keep asking: “What can I do differently?” “How can I make them understand?” “How can I make them stay?” But what if the better question is: “Why does their choice matter more to me than my own?” 2. What parts of myself have I abandoned just to keep this relationship alive? What boundaries did you stop enforcing? What needs did you stop expressing? What truths did you swallow? What behavior did you start tolerating? What version of yourself did you have to become just to keep them comfortable? Because sometimes you don’t lose yourself all at once. You trade pieces of yourself for temporary moments of connection. 3. If I stopped trying to convince them to choose me, would I still choose them? That’s the question that can break the entire illusion. Because maybe you’re not fighting for the relationship anymore. Maybe you’re fighting for the validation of finally being chosen. And those are two completely different things. Do I actually want this person… or do I want this person to finally want me? 4. What am I teaching myself by staying where I have to constantly prove my worth? Every time you accept inconsistency and call it patience… Every time you accept distance and call it understanding… Every time you silence your needs because you’re afraid they’ll leave… you’re teaching yourself something. You’re teaching yourself that being loved requires you to tolerate being unwanted. And that’s not love. That’s self-abandonment wearing the clothes of loyalty. 5. If nothing about this relationship changed, could I honestly live this way for another five years? Not the version you hope it becomes. Not the person you believe they could become. Not the future you keep imagining. This relationship. As it exists today. Would you choose it? Because that’s the question you’ve been avoiding. You’ve been making decisions based on potential… while your nervous system has been living in reality. And here’s the truth: You cannot abandon yourself enough to make another person choose you. You can become more patient. More understanding. More attractive. More forgiving. More available. You can give more. Try harder. Wait longer. Love deeper. And still not be chosen. And if you have to destroy yourself to keep someone… you didn’t save the relationship. You lost yourself trying to save it. So maybe the question isn’t: “How do I get them to choose me?” Maybe it’s: “Why have I stopped choosing myself?” Because the moment you answer that honestly… the entire relationship starts looking different. And maybe that’s the hardest realization of all: You were so afraid they would abandon you… that you abandoned yourself first.
