Managers... you don't need to be tougher at work, you just need this one sentence. So picture this. You give someone on your team some feedback, and they get that look. And you know the look I'm talking about? Where they start to push back, or their eyes get a little watery, or they say, but I've been doing my best. And in your head, you go, oh no. And you automatically start feeling yourself wanting to soften everything. And you say something like, you know what? Forget it. Don't worry about it. We'll discuss this next time. And now nothing's actually going to change, let's be real, because you didn't have the same conversation. You didn't follow through because you were too worried about being mean. And in two weeks you're going to have the same conversation again. And for those of you who don't know me, I'm Marissa, your friendly millennial mentor here on TikTok, trying to make workplace suck just a little bit less. And I give you words for the hard workplace conversation that nobody trained you for. So here's what I would say if I started to see that face. Um, I would say, I believe you, and I still need this to change. That's it. That's the whole thing. And watch the difference, because it is there before. Before when you say something like, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, don't worry about it. We'll get it, we'll figure it out together, you give them the chance to walk away and then you're going to be frustrated because things won't change. But now, if you say, I believe you, but I still need this to change by Friday, and you just stop talking, it doesn't make you mean. You didn't get mean. You didn't make them cry. You just didn't walk back the issue. So try that this week. Uh, when you need to talk to somebody, um, about something, and you start to feel yourself soften, use the sentence instead. And screenshot this so that you actually have the words when the moment matters.
