Here's how to reset the bar after you've been too easy on your team, make it stick without giving your team whiplash. Now I work with a lot of leaders who struggle with resetting expectations after letting certain behaviors slide for too long. And here's how to own it like a leader instead of micromanaging and giving everyone a hard time. You can't own it. Team for not meeting expectations that you've never set. So if that's the case, you need to own it first and you go, you say, look, I wasn't clear on certain expectations, that's on me. This changes moving forward. When you take ownership, you drop defensiveness and people will lean in. And then you need to get clear on what good actually looks like. Write it down as a new standard. Because unspoken rules is how you got here in the first place. Number two, name it. The new culture that you wanna create. Out loud and give people a way out. So you say, look, that wasn't the culture that I wanted. And here's the new culture I'd like for us to be moving forward. What we need in order to get to where we want to go as a team. It's a big shift. It might not be for everyone. And I wanna be real with you. If this is not for you, I will respect that. No hard feelings. We are doing as moving forward. It's up to you whether you want to be a part of it. The ones who are choosing the standard that you are setting. And that's who you want in the trenches with you. Number three, make it real. The consequences real, not implied. So you say, look, here's exactly what happens if it slips. Because rules without consequences are just suggestions. And your team already knows that. And that's why they've gotten away with it in the past. So what you tolerate now becomes a new baseline moving forward. And if you let one deadline slip, you've told that standard is now optional. So you overcommunicate the standard. You ask the team what they need in order to meet it. And you hold the line. So yeah, resetting the bar, it's uncomfortable. And some people who loved the easy version, the previous version of the culture will push back. And some might walk away. Because that is how you trade a culture of mediocrity for one of real accountability.
