My 93 year old Grandpa really is a definition of health as well. Here are three healthy habits he swears by to keep him fit, sharp, and independent. First, exercise. My grandpa wakes up at 4:30 every morning and moves his body for two hours. He does his own form of T'igong, which is basically slow intentional movements that focus on energy in different body parts. He does every exercise 36 times because apparently this is a lucky number. After going through his body exercises, he has a whole range of facial massages to do to help with blood flow. Final stretches before he's ready to rise and greet the day. But it's not over. He now sits up to move on to the next stage. We're now at the mirror-facing portion where he does some exercises to stretch his neck. My grandpa has always been praised for having great hair and that's because he brushes for 36 times every day. That was the indoor warm-up. Now we're going outdoors. He does a variety of body movements and each one he does 36 times. "36 times". After all this movement, he walks laps around the backyard for about 30 minutes. The whole time he's rolling walnuts between his hands. My grandpa always has these walnuts on him. If they're not in his hands, you can hear them jingling in his pocket. If he doesn't have them for some reason, he likes to use this rock. It's kind of a relaxation tool. It's sort of meditative, but it also helps with fine motor skills in the fingers and he rotates between both hands. Next habit is health tracking. My grandpa is very diligent with tracking his vitals. He's also very disciplined with taking his medications and supplements. He measures his pulse ox, temperature, and blood pressure and writes all in his little notebook. He's also really big on foot care and swears by the CeraVe cream after his foot bath. And lastly, he really shows me you can have hobbies at any age. He loves to garden, he plants and paints his own gourds. These days he's been into calligraphy. He was going to do a demo for me on his paper bag scraps, but when I asked him to write my name, he upgraded to his white paper and then decided I was worthy of his red paper. My Chinese name is Yang Dan Na and it's one of the few things I can read in Chinese. I was truly in awe of my grandpa's skill and precision and I was just happy to witness him having so much fun and enjoying his hobbies. I'm so grateful I got to watch my grandpa write my name so beautifully and I will forever cherish this. My grandparents live independently. They can cook and clean on their own and I really do think it's because they've created such healthy habits.
