Why it worked

The video provides a highly actionable, low-effort 'hack' for a ubiquitous tool that viewers already use, making it immediately relevant and shareable.

Summary

The creator explains how Gmail handles email addresses by ignoring capitalization, periods, and text following a plus sign. He suggests using the plus-sign feature to track which websites might be selling user data.

Structure

1Explaining Gmail's handling of capitalization and periods
2Introducing the plus-sign email alias trick
3Demonstrating how to use the trick for spam tracking
4Asking for additional user tips

Product placement

Gmail (a) ACTS — the creator explains how its email address handling works, specifically how it ignores capitalization, periods, and plus-signs for routing purposes. This is the core subject of the video. Removing the mention of Gmail would change the entire topic of the video.

So I posted a video about how Gmail doesn't care about capitalizations in email addresses or periods in email addresses. So all three of these email addresses are the exact same. And people in my comments were quick to remind me that anything after a plus sign in an email address is also ignored by Gmail. So if you have to create a new email address or something, say you want to sign up for a sketchy website to see which Golden Girl character you are, you can use bballstud4life+goldengirls@gmail.com and this will also be the same email address for you. One of the ways that I have used this in the past is like I said, if I had to sign up for a website that I wasn't super sure about, then I would know that if I started getting spam email to this email address, that that is the website that sold my information. So I think those are all the tips and tricks that I know. Are there any other things that you guys know about Gmail that I'm missing? Let me know.
