Amid all the debates about identity, ancestry and delineation, it’s refreshing to hear Black Americans openly acknowledge their African roots. 🌍 But acknowledging African heritage doesn’t mean ignoring the distinct cultures that developed among Black Americans over generations in North America. Those cultures, traditions and histories deserve to be recognised and respected too. 🇺🇸 It’s similar to Africa itself. We recognise our shared continental heritage while also recognising the enormous diversity between different African peoples, ethnic groups, languages and cultures. So there’s no contradiction in acknowledging African roots while also recognising the unique cultural identity that developed among Black Americans.
