Transcript
Larry the Cable Guy explains how Pixar found him for the role of Mater in Cars. You're in Cars. How did you get the part? Well, I'm gonna tell you how I got the part of Mater. They told me they Mater? Mater is the name of my character, Mater, and it's a tow truck. They told me when I originally went out for the part, they said, well, it's a very likable and loving character, only it looks a little goofy. And I'm thinking, oh Lord, that means it's between me or you. Right. To be honest with you, I got it because John Lasseter told me that they were looking for this voice. They went through about 150, 200 people. They couldn't find the voice. The first one up there, of course, was me, and he goes, man, who is that guy? He goes, get call that guy up. That's my tow truck. So that's how I got the part.

Before he became the voice of one of Pixar’s most beloved characters, Larry the Cable Guy was known for stand-up comedy and his famous “Git-R-Done” persona In 2006, he took on a role that introduced him to an entirely new audience when he voiced Mater, the rusty but lovable tow truck from Radiator Springs Larry’s Southern drawl and comedic timing gave Mater a personality that was funny, loyal, and full of heart Mater quickly became one of the most recognizable characters in Cars, appearing alongside Lightning McQueen and returning in Cars 2, Cars 3, and his own Mater’s Tall Tales shorts The role proved that sometimes a character’s voice can become just as memorable as the character itself
