Rescuers expected bodies. Instead, a hand grabbed them. Follow @historynows for the stories behind the internet's biggest moments. When the tugboat Jascon-4 capsized off the coast of Nigeria in 2013, ship's cook Harrison Okene found himself trapped nearly 100 feet underwater inside the overturned vessel. An air pocket kept him alive, but with darkness surrounding him and oxygen slowly disappearing, survival seemed impossible. For nearly 60 hours, he remained alone, listening to the sounds of the ocean while waiting for help that might never come. When rescue divers finally entered the wreck expecting to recover bodies, one suddenly felt a hand grab his arm. Against every expectation, Okene was still alive. His incredible survival remains one of the most astonishing underwater rescue stories ever documented. Credits: DCN Diving / respective owner.
