Why it worked

The video leverages a high-stakes, emotionally resonant personal story to capture attention, using the documentary's compelling subject matter to drive interest in the platform hosting the full series.

Summary

A prisoner named Billy discusses the emotional difficulty of explaining his incarceration to his young children. The video serves as a promotional clip for the documentary series Inside Barlinnie available on BBC iPlayer.

Structure

1Billy discusses his children's perception of his absence
2Billy reflects on his crime and prison sentence
3The video transitions to a promotional CTA for the full documentary on BBC iPlayer

Product placement

BBC iPlayer (a) it ACTS — it is the platform where the full documentary is hosted and the CTA directs the viewer to it. Removing it would change the call to action.

Original caption

“They’re not old enough to know where I am.” After being sentenced to five years in prison, Billy talks about the impact being away from home has on his kids. Watch #InsideBarlinnie on BBC iPlayer.

On-screen text

My kids think I'm at work. They think I'm working away, but that's eh. Something that I'll explain to them when they're old enough, but at the moment, just not old enough to understand where I am, so. In the meantime, daddy's at work. They're being punished. But I'm pretty certain that I'll be able to make up to them in the future. Billy was found guilty of being in possession and couriering £1 million of cocaine. A crime that resulted in him being sentenced to over five years. I made a big mistake and paid the price for it.
