Happy birthday Denis Villeneuve, 59 today, and he was storyboarding Dune at 13 years old with a friend named Nicolas Kadima, sketching out shots from the book by hand since neither of them actually had a camera. He watched Lynch's 1984 version not long after and remembers thinking, someday someone else will try this again. Never imagined that someone would end up being him. "Cinema is an art form that is designed to go across borders, making poetry with a camera, that's the essence of what I do." Took him until his 50s to actually get there, but once Legendary handed him the rights, he turned around and delivered the entire trilogy in under five years, Part One in 2021, Part Two in 2024, Part Three landing this December. A dream he'd been quietly storyboarding since before most of his cast was even born.
