David Robert Mitchell built one of the scariest horror movies of the last decade out of a nightmare he kept having when he was young: something walking toward him, slowly, and never stopping. He shot it around Detroit for about $1.3 million, with wide lenses that keep you scanning the edges of the frame. You can never pin down when it’s set either: old cars and CRT TVs sit next to a modern cellphone and a clamshell e-reader that doesn’t exist, because Mitchell wanted it to feel like a dream. Disasterpeace, who’d only scored video games before, wrote the synth score in about three weeks to make Cannes. It made over $23 million worldwide and turned Maika Monroe into a horror name. Now she’s coming back as Jay in They Follow, with Mitchell returning to write and direct. It Follows (2014)
