Heir. Prophet. Emperor. In Dune, Paul is a reluctant kid on Caladan who isn’t sure he even wants his father’s title. In Part Two, he drinks the Water of Life, becomes Muad’Dib, and lets the Fremen believe he’s their messiah, knowing exactly what that holy war will cost. In Part Three, more than a decade later, he’s Emperor of the known universe. He’s not steering the future anymore, he’s trapped in it, and Villeneuve says the film is about Paul dealing with the consequences of having too much power.
