Here's a look at the history of the department of war's seal design. The story begins in 1778, when the War Office seal featured armor, weapons and a rattlesnake. The War Department, established in 1789, used that seal before it passed to the Army in 1947. A separate eagle-and-shield seal was approved that year, adopting the Department of Defense name in 1949. In 2025, the inscription changed to “Department of War,” reflecting a secondary title while retaining the existing imagery and blue-and-gold palette. #DesignHistory #VisualIdentity #MilitaryHeraldry
