I brought some red ochre clay with me after learning about the Hamar people in Ethiopia, then combined it with an Afar-inspired wooden-stick curling technique to create these spiral coils. The Afar are known for traditional hair practices using plant-based ingredients like sesame leaf mucilage, while the Hamar are known for red ochre hair styling, so mixing inspiration from both traditions created such a cool final look. One of the beautiful Afar women even helped me wrap each section around the wooden stick to get those perfect finger-coil-style spirals.
