Managers, if you're afraid to hold your employees accountable, I have a question for you...
Have you read your company's policies lately? Because chances are, the expectations you're afraid to enforce are already written down.
Attendance issues? There's probably a policy.
Inappropriate behavior? There's probably a policy.
Refusing to follow procedures? Yep. Probably a policy for that, too.
So why are you treating accountability like it's a personal confrontation? It's not personal. It's your job.
You don't have to be angry. You don't have to be intimidating. You don't even have to be disappointed. You just have to be consistent.
When someone violates a policy, address it. Have the conversation. Document it. Apply appropriate consequences. And follow through.
Because every time you ignore a violation, you're sending a message to the employees who ARE following the rules. And trust me, they're paying attention.
Your job isn't to make everyone happy. Your job is to create an environment where expectations are clear, policies are applied fairly, and accountability isn't optional.
Stop being afraid to hold people accountable. Start being afraid of what happens when you don't. That's leadership.
