I got married at 19 and I was in college when I got married. And I remember sitting in the sociology class and they were talking about signs that show a marriage is likely to stay together or fall apart. And of course contempt was brought up. If a couple has contempt for each other, if one partner has contempt for each other, like they're doomed. And I remember sitting in this lecture and thinking, oh no, cause I just gotten married and my partner most definitely had contempt for me and there was nothing I could do. And I had that marriage for three years. Now I'm divorced. Now I'm divorced. You know what? You can't come back from it. There is no coming back from contempt. But I sat in that lecture thinking, maybe. It's so funny cause so many people ask me like, well, were there signs that you were gonna get divorced? Yes, from the beginning of the relationship there were signs it was not going to work out. But since it was my first ever serious relationship and I had no point of reference for how relationships are supposed to look or feel, of course there were signs. But I had not the maturity or wisdom to recognise them and act upon them. There were so many moments like that, so many moments where I just thought to myself like, oh no, this is not going to work. This is something we cannot come back from. And yet we kept trucking. And yet we gave it the old college try.
