Indonesian stocks are plunging. Why? Because MSCI is threatening to downgrade Indonesia two levels, making it the only Asian country to have stand-alone status. This is a massive deal. A downgrade may cut Indonesia off from the billions of dollars that invest in passive index funds. Goldman Sachs estimates $5.6 billion could vanish overnight, if MSCI acts on their warning. Stocks were jolted last week and continue to sell off, taking the market to its lowest levels since 2020. In fact, global funds have already pulled more than $5 billion in 2026, the worst outflow on record. So why is MSCI making this threat? The index provider is calling out serious red flags in the Indonesian stock market. They're alleging inconsistent corporate governance, coordinated trading and not enforcing the rules. Now time is running out. The exchange is meeting with MSCI to increase fines on misbehaving companies, while corporations are stepping up with stock buybacks. Yet these incremental measures are failing to calm the market as the issue is becoming a macro headache with the rupiah and Indonesian bonds selling off. Policymakers will have to coordinate a much wider response or this single warning could turn into a macroeconomic vicious cycle.
