On Saturday 17 October 2026, the town hall of Limoges in France was set on fire during the nationwide protests. Authorities say the fire was started deliberately. By that evening its 43 metre clock tower had collapsed and much of the roof was gone 🔥 The building opened on 14 July 1883 and was built as a "palace of the people". Inside, the French state placed paintings that told the story of Limoges and its region. Henri-Paul Motte painted two large scenes for the grand staircase: The Workshop of Léonard Limosin, the Renaissance master who made Limoges enamel famous, and Past and Present, showing Henri IV bringing the Limousin into France. Upstairs, Jean-Joseph Weerts painted the ceiling of the Blue Room, the old council chamber, with The Genius of Liberty granting charters to the towns of the Limousin. In the wedding room, couples married beneath a ceiling by Urbain Bourgeois. Many of these works are now feared lost, but photos from inside show at least one of Motte's paintings still on the wall, damaged but standing. 💔 #art #painting #History #france #architecture
