If you've never smoked, then you should never start vaping. That is the very simple message as the results of a study into the long-term health impacts of vaping are published. Three years ago, Sky News filmed the start of that study, comparing the vascular function of 20 vapers, 20 cigarette smokers, and 20 people who didn't smoke anything at all. So what did they find about those vape users? Vascular health, which is the the quality of the blood vessel, were similarly impaired in compared to smokers, and lower to the to the people who never smoke or never vape before. And we have a similar result for the for the fitness. If you look at someone who smoke heavily, has more than 20 cigarettes a day for a couple of years, obviously they go to vaping, it might be healthier than smoking, but it doesn't mean that vaping is healthy. Isabel was one of the participants in the study back then. She was a vape user. So I've quit now for four weeks, which has been difficult, but it's okay so far. Um, I think the main reason I've quit is because I want to go into healthcare. I want to be a healthcare professional. I can't advise someone to stop vaping when I'm doing it myself. It tastes nice and because you think it's a vapor and not a smoke, that it will be okay. But the stuff that's going into your lungs, it's just not good for you at all. The researchers say these findings are particularly important when you consider the boom in vaping in the last decade. It's most pronounced among young adults. There are a million people who are vaping now who had never smoked before. Professor Matt Evison is a consultant in respiratory medicine and the lead clinician in Manchester and a campaign called Make Smoking History. If you currently smoke, the single biggest thing you can do to improve your health, improve your wealth, uh, extend your life is to stop smoking. And a nicotine vape is one of the most effective ways we have of doing that, and it comes at a fraction of the risk of smoking tobacco. That's a really important public health message because there is a lot of misinformation out there. And unfortunately, there are many smokers who believe vaping is as harmful as cigarette smoke, and that's not true. If you've never smoked, then you should never start vaping. So what do regular vapers make of that? People kind of assume that vaping isn't as bad as cigarettes. Cigarettes taste harsher, it's much more in your face and they've been around for longer. So, but vaping is just no better. And it's also just always in your hand, it's much more convenient than a cigarette is, so it's not any better. I've been doing it again for about like two months now and I'm starting to feel it. But like I know when I start to feel it a bit more in my lungs, I kind of stop. Do you want to try and give up? Yeah. I mean, I have tried, but it is it is pretty hard to be fair. It is quite addictive, so, yeah.
