The German insurance company Allianz just got out of paying an insurance claim filed by the University of Exeter in the U.K. The damages the University of Exeter claimed came after it intentionally detonated a bomb that German forces dropped in WWII that had been sitting dormant on the university’s campus for the last 79 years. The bomb was originally discovered by construction crews in 2021, and the experts that the university brought in decided the best thing to do was to surround the bomb in sand and then undertake a risky procedure to blow away the bomb casing to expose the explosive within. Well, turns out they either needed more sand, or underestimated the bomb, because the planned explosion caused damage to the surrounding buildings. But when the University of Exeter filed a claim with their insurance carrier, Allianz, they denied the University of Exeter’s claim because of an exemption for wartime damages. It turns out most insurance policies exempt payments for war-related damages, because, in a wide-scale conflict, the entire insurance industry would become saddled with runaway claims.
