The most important person of the last 100 years?

So right now I'm reading about probably the most important person of the last 100 years that most of us never heard of. Lee Kuan Yew. He was the prime minister and essentially founder of Singapore. Singapore used to be a part of Malaysia and they were kind of thrown out. They were basically a broke swamp. There was nothing there and by the time he died, they were a first world country. Autobiography is called From Third World to First. Now reading this book has been a bit of an eye opener just because I'm somebody who comes from more of a left of centre radical tradition mentally. A lot of the decisions that he made to make Singapore rich kinda goes against my initial preconceptions how things should work. So for example he made English the national language. A lot about the time were like that's some colonial bullshit but he was like English is the language of business and if you want people to come here and give us money we got to speak English. Second he stacked down on corruption so harshly that he had some of his brethrens imprisoned. So his friends would call him like please can you help me and he'd be like there's nothing I can do for you you're going to jail. Third another example that most of us people don't like is that he inherited a multi ethnic society and basically prescribed that each apartment building had to have a certain percentage of each ethnic group in the building because he did not want you know ethnic enclaves where people stuck to themselves and didn't integrate. As somebody who's kind of grown up in the west it kind of feels a bit icky to do that but I understand why he did it. He also implemented a mix of the most ruthless capitalism ever was good social programs. So for example like they had like no minimum wage. They basically was no tax but at the same time government basically provided all the housing. Just to own my bias what saddens me a lot of somebody who's really passionate about the development of Africa as a continent as well is that when he took over Singapore their GDP was essentially the equivalent of like Kenya or Ghana. GDP today whole another level. Why do I say that he's one of the most important people in history? So Deng Xiaoping who was the leader of China during the 70s and 80s and nineties visited Singapore and and it said that actually visiting Singapore is partly inspiration why he decided to open up China and make it into a more capitalist economy which is now enabled them to become super duper rich and now we're basically in a multi polar world where the west doesn't necessarily have all the power.
