Vancouver
vs
New York City
from a girlie who's lived
in these two wildly
different cities
First Impressions
NYC: I stepped off the plane and
it felt like the city punched me in
the face...in the best way lol. It's
loud, chaotic, electric and the city
doesn't slow down for anyone,
which weirdly made me speed up
Vancouver: It felt like a deep
breath I didn't know I needed. It's
quieter, slower and feels like the
city is saying "you're allowed to
rest here"
The People
NYC: Everyone's intense in a
way that's low key inspiring. You'll
meet someone at Trader Joe's who
changes your life on a Tuesday.
Also, everyone's just a little unwell
in a charming way
Vancouver: People are nice but
almost suspiciously nice. A lil
passive aggressive if we're being
real. Making freinds here is less
love at first vibe and more slow
burn, slow text, soft launch
The Views
NYC: Skyscrapers that make you
feel smol in a cinematic way.
Rooftop bars with overpriced
drinks and million dollar sunsets.
The empire state building casually
photobombing your walk to CVS
Vancouver: Mountains meet the
ocean everywhere you look. Nature
is always flexing on you. Hiking
views that make you want to cry
from happiness
The Nature
NYC: Central Park is a great
therapist but like any good
therapist, nature has to be
scheduled in nyc. Living in nyc had
me romanticizing trees
Vancouver: Nature is the lifestyle.
You don't need to try. You just
kinda... exist in it. You'll likely see
30 canadian geese, 2 eagles and
a guy paddleboarding with his dog
all before noon
Getting Around
NYC: Your own two feet, the
subway, ubers. You will get honked
at. You will get screamed at. You
will miss your stop. Your train will
be delayed. But you'll feel alive.
Vancouver: Bike lanes for days.
Busses where ppl say thank you to
the driver and most ppl have a
car. Biggest con is BC ferries
thinking they're selling Coachella
tickets smh
The Energy
NYC: You feel like you should be doing
something amazing at all times. and if
you're not, the guilt eats at you. The
city is inspiring and exhausting and
occasionally disrespectful. The bar is
always high. The city will humble you
fast but it'll also reward you when
you least expect it
Vancouver: The vibe is slower and
more intentional. More "how was your
weekend" and less "what's your 5 year
plan?" You have space to just be. To
notice how good a walk feels. To make
plans around the weather and not
your calendar.
The Lessons
NYC taught me how to take up
space. How to speak up, show up,
and keep going. It made me more
sure of who I was becoming
Vancouver taught me how to
pause, how to soften, how to
prioritize things that make me
happy, how to build a life that
feels like mine
The Verdict
It's not about which city is
"better", they were just different
seasons of my life
NYC taught me how to rise and
chase big things, to move fast, to
be bold
Vancouver taught me how to
root, to slow down, to chose
softness, to building something
that feels like home
i need both
