This founder built a billion dollar skin care brand from a blog. Welcome back to my series founder files where I dive into founders and their stories. Emily Weiss started her career at Vogue after graduating from NYU, entering at Teen Vogue and was even on the hills. But in 2010, she launched a side project called into the Gloss, interviewing women about the top products in their shelves. She would wake up at 4:00 a.m. to write her blog before work every single day. And by 2014, she had over 10 million monthly views. It became obvious that beauty consumers didn't want more choices. They just wanted better ones. So she pitched a brand that did exactly that. After 11 rejection, four runner finally said yes and invested $2 million for her company built for the people. It launched in 2014 with four products and with the philosophy care first makeup second and everything from the pink millennial branding to the minimalist packaging was inspired by her customer feedback. Just six weeks after launch she raised $8.4 million in series A funding. Gisela expanded direct consumer into flagship stores and even raised $265 million putting them at a one 1.8 billion dollar valuation. In 2020, G was forced to close stores. That same year, former employees also called out racial inequities at G. Family publicly apologized and invested $1 million back into Black Beauty founders. In 2022, Emily stepped down as CEO. She stayed on as executive chairman and the brand even started selling at Sephora a major pivot from direct to consumer. Today, Emily is a mom, a board member of all birds and an active startup investor. Comment what I should do next.
