this founder turned her chronic stomach aches into a multimillion dollar kitchen staple. welcome back to my series founder files where i dive into founders and their stories. Aishwarya Iyer studied media and globalization at NYU and then built her career in PR. she started at Lancome and then helped scale a fintech startup and eventually worked at a VC firm. in 2015 Aishwarya moved to LA with her soon to be husband which is when they started cooking at home more often. but after every meal they had horrendous stomach aches. so to get to the root of the problem they started an elimination diet, cutting out bread, then dairy, and even some spices. nothing worked until a friend suggested that they tried removing olive oil and within days their symptoms were gone. Aishwarya found that over 70% of olive oils in the US are degraded, rancid or cut with cheaper oils and some of them had even been sitting on shelves for years and others were just outright fraud and no one was talking about it. she started visiting small olive farms, meeting with producers and then tasting olive oil straight from the source and found that the best olive oil had grassy, spicy and complex flavors. but the farmers producing it weren't really turning a profit, they lacked branding, distribution and visibility. so after she got certified from UC Davis Olive Center she started building Brightland, the name being a nod to California's bright terrain and vibrant ingredients. she designed the sleek matte UV protected bottles that really look like they belonged on the skincare shelf instead of the food aisle and without raising any capital in 2018 she launched with two products. within a week she sold out and even had a massive wait list. her bottle was featured in Vogue, New York Times because they became a staple on kitchen counters and honestly all over Instagram. in 2019 she raised a small round of angel checks and over the next few years she released more SKUs, garlic and chili infused oils, vinegars and even raw honeys. by 2023 Brightland was in over 900 retail locations all over the US. let me know who i should do next
