Nick Vlahos
- Scale back number of products
- Invest in vertical integration to pursue
new formulations and packaging
- Simplify naming conventions
- Lower price points
- DTC > omnichannel
- International expansion (through EU
retailer Douglas at Honest in 7 primary
markets)
- On the glossy podcast, he shared that
"Consumers buy brands not just
products"
- An omnichannel approach - explains
Rhode's reported interest in Sephora;
Nick described it as a key strategic pillar
to follow the consumer while he was at
Honest.
- Some people want to buy via their digital
device, others want to pop into Target-
his objective is making products
accessible to consumers so it's easy for
them to consume.
- Following ipo, the honest company was
doing a third of their business on DDC a
a third of their business through retail and
a third of the business through Amazon.
- Curious if they'll take a similar approach
with rhode.
- Nick really worked to grow international
expansion for honest and it's clearly an
opportunity he sees with Rhode
- When asked about community while at
honest, he talked about the delta
between content, community and
commerce as driving advocacy.
- 50% of beauty brand discovery was
through friends and family, where 25%
was via online and 25% via influencers
(cited in 2022)
- Learned early at Burt's Bees that
investing in internal laboratories
control formula development
Easier to quickly innovate on
interests and trends.
Rhode has seen explosive growth since
launch in 2022 independent of Nick's joining
the company, but since joining in early 2024,
it's clear that an exit strategy is in motion -
smart to capitalize on the height of brand
interest by taking the next step.

You are amongst those who are shocked or offended that Hailey Bieber's Road is currently exploring a sale with a $1.4 billion valuation. After only being in market for little less than three years, then I hate to break it to you, but you are in denial because this brand is doing everything right. Road's new CEO, Nick Flahos was previously the CEO of the Honest Company during their IPO where they went public out of valuation of $1.4 billion. This made me curious. I wanted to know more about his playbook. his experiences at Bird's feet and then the Honest Company would likely paint a picture for what he would accomplish at road. This glossy podcast did not disappoint. Don't worry, I took notes. So much of what Nick did at the Honest Company is exactly what he's implementing for road. Everything from scaling DTC into an Omnichannel business to investing in Havalia and International expansion. And probably most importantly, understanding the investment in brand as critical because consumers buy brands, not just products. This idea of following your consumer and ensuring that the brand exists at point of sale where that customer is most likely to make a purchase. It sounds so simple but requires so much strategy. I also found his comments about investing in vertical integration extremely interesting because when you think about the purpose behind raising a meaningful round of capital. It's usually to invest in high- yield long-term growth strategies. Something like vertical integration. Second road brought on Nick as CEO in 2024. It was clear that an exit strategy was in motion. But just because they hired JP Morgan, doesn't mean they're actually going to sell right now. was reportedly exploring the sale last year and the same thing with Rare Beauty. so you never know. But the more that Road does what they did in Miami this week, the more ammo they have to back that valuation.
