10 tips for first time cat owners.

1. I recommend keeping your cat inside. On average, indoor cats live longer than outdoor cats. When I was a kid, my parents wouldn't let us keep our cats inside, so I've experienced a lot of cat deaths. One was hit by a car, one was stepped on, one was attacked by a falcon, and two were killed by dogs. 2. They can live perfectly happy lives indoors as long as you're intentional about their enrichment. Basically, you want to keep them mentally and physically stimulated with things like toys, scratching posts, hiding spots, puzzles, window views, playtime, etc. 3. Research what common household items are poisonous or dangerous for cats. Like lilies and minoxidil are highly toxic to cats. If they swallow it, they'll need emergency surgery. 4. If you're getting a kitten, make sure to get them spayed or neutered, usually around four to five months old, because it helps prevent aggressive behavior and reduces the risk of cancer and other health issues. 5. If you can afford cat insurance, get it. You never know what will happen to your cat down the line and never want to be in a position where you can't help your cat because of finances. 6. Cats are not great at drinking water, so I highly recommend getting them a water fountain. A lot of cats like them, but you can also just add water to their meals if you're on a budget. 7. Get an air purifier. It will keep the air healthy not only for you, but also for your cat, which a lot of people don't think about. 8. Put away your nice things that can be easily knocked over or damaged. Young cats are curious and mischievous. They will find a way to climb on everything. Bee has broken many of my figurines, my keyboard, and my laptop. 9. With patience, affection, and treats, take your time to get them used to things early. Things like clipping their claws, brushing them, etc. 10. Don't just blindly listen to random people on the internet, including me. There's a lot of misinformation that people confidently share and uneducated people who act like they're experts. Always, always do your research and listen to your vet.
