Bee recently had his first medical emergency which cost $3,000 and this is my experience with my pet insurance. I started paying for it 2 years ago when Bee was a kitten. I didn't know if it was worth it, but it's cheapest when your pets are young, so I decided to take the chance and hope for the best. The cheapest option I could find was Figo since I could use a discount through Costco. Year 1 was $769 for two cats. For each cat, I selected a $200 deductible, 70% reimbursement up to $10,000, and accident & illness exam coverage. The insurance doesn't cover anything wellness or preventative related like vaccines, unless you also add on their wellness plan, which I only did for year one because kittens need more work done. Without the wellness plan, year 2 was $361. After Bee got sick, his first vet visit was $185. His urgent care visit was $964, so that's when we hit our deductible and the reimbursement came out to be $598. His ER stay was $1,832 and the reimbursement was $1,268. In total, we spent $1,130 on pet insurance and was reimbursed $2,151, netting us $1,021. So for us, pet insurance has been financially worth it so far. That's not to be the case for everyone. Insurance can be pretty hit or miss. I will say though, having pet insurance does help with peace of mind and decision making. Like I'm more likely to seek professional help knowing that I have insurance. Since it's worth it for us, we will continue renewing our pet insurance!
