In 2022, a church put on an illegal showing of Hamilton that was SO bad that it got the creator himself's attention. "SCamilton", as fans would call it, was a religious version of Hamilton put on by a church in Texas. The entire thing was performed by church members and the songs were changed to be religious. To be able to perform shows or musicals in your local schools or what not, you need permission from the source. And although Hamilton fans didn't really care about the legality of how they watched Hamilton (for the most part *wink* ), they did have a vendetta against the churches version because they changed the source material and they found out that the pastor spewing homophobic rhetoric at his sermons. Fans began posting about Scamilton everywhere on social media in hopes that Lin Manuel Miranda, the creator, would see it and he would take legal action against it. And that's exactly what happened. The Hamilton legal team hopped on this immediately. "The Door Christian Fellowship McAllen Church did not ask for, or receive, a license from the producers or creators of 'Hamilton' to produce, stage, replicate or alter any part of 'Hamilton,'" reads a statement posted to the venue's 897 Instagram followers. The church did put out an apology, which seems to now be deleted. But in the apology they confirmed that they never had permission from anyone to do this unauthorised version of Hamilton. that they hope that this lesson could help other people learn about copyright and infringement. As for the case, we're not sure how much money the Hamilton team got, but we do know that they got some form of payment. And it was revealed that all the funds Earned went to LGBT Charities. and that's Scamilton!
