1. You won’t learn many practical skills after a bachelor’s After a bachelor’s you expect to have to useful skills you can use in clinical practice, be able to diagnose your friends with ease. But actually, you learn basic theory which you could’ve seen on Youtube. It’s why you can’t be a registered psychologist after just a bachelor’s, real learning only comes in the master’s program. 2. Getting into a masters program is nearly impossible. This is the most competitive degree out there purely because of the lack of openings. Universities often only take 10-15 spots per Master’s cohort. With this you’re competing against tens of thousands of applicants. Completing just a bachelor’s is nowhere near enough. Top grades, outside experience, extracurriculars. 3. It’s incredibly hard to get consistently good grades Everything in the course is subjective. The way you write things, even set theories aren’t set in stone. Some places it says this, some it says the opposite. Psychology isn’t hard because of the workload, but because of the ambiguity in marking. 4. You have to sacrifice alot Psychology is one of the most underfunded curriculums in university. It takes the most amount of unpaid hours out of any healthcare degree to actually become one. 3000 hours. If you don’t have people to be able to support you in this time, alot of sacrifies are required. Psychology seems like a fun innocent degree where you get to learn cool things about the human mind and brain. But in reality, it’s one of the toughest career choices you could make. If you’re truly passionate about this subject, go for it, just know the journey is not as easy or fun as it may seem.
