Tell me if you've heard this one before I'm leaving my job in private equity to start a bakery, a fashion line, a makeup line, make frozen organic ethnic foods. Vibecode, open a funeral home. What's higher status-pe or dtc startups 🥺 If you're in the mood to talk about some like, elite status game stuff. I wanna talk about the relationship between finance world culture and actually making stuff. In other words, this phenomenon of everyone leaving their white collar elite professions to start consumer facing businesses. Okay, so I would say like the 70s, 80s, 90s, certainly throughout my adulthood, the most prestigious careers for kids coming from top undergraduate or graduate school, certainly business schools, have been finance of all stripes and consulting. They've been absolute black holes of talent. The only really thing started to rival them I would say started to rival them in like the 2010s was big tech, you know, like FAANG rotational programs and eventually getting into YC that kind of thing. I wanna have a whole separate discussion doing startups, an allegedly risky counter cultural thing has been like utterly institutional. Basically for a long time, elite students, the most competitive students would go to work in these like, abstracted finance jobs. And far less competitive, comparatively far less prestigious and sought after would be rotational leadership programs jobs at like Target, Walmart, res. Honestly, it's why these videos are often phrased the way they are because coming from the context of somebody who I don't know, let's just imagine, like, went to Dartmouth or Columbia, and then they went to, like, Harvard Business School, and then they left If you're coming from it's kind of wild to imagine leaving finance to make puppets. The videos are phrased in a way that you are meant to have already assumed. That's outrageous. I would love to know why someone would leave private equity. To be clear, I think more people should leave private equity to make puppets. I think the culture in which Jobs where the main output are, like, spreadsheets and decks are seen as more prestigious than jobs where the main output is stuff is bad. I think that's bad, and I think it's very important and very good, actually, that that is beginning to change. I think it's beginning to change in large part because VCs for a while, saw these direct to consumer as very fundable. And so the world of CPG entrepreneurship was kind of able to, borrow prestige from tech. But fundamentally, we need to praise people who make stuff. The great irony is with jobs like consulting, banking, the higher you go, the more it just becomes a sales job. And at the top, your boss's, boss, like the partner or whatever that everyone is scared of. He is absolutely kissing up to the CEO of some boring company that makes widgets because that's how he gets paid.
